Athlete Spotlight

Name: Robin Haroutunian
Day 1 with CFHH: 1/4/2012
Occupation: CFO of Seaside Specialty Foods, Inc, a Food Marketing and Development Company
Favorite Thing to Do (Other than CF, of course): Spend time at the beach with my family
Biggest Goat: 1. CrossFit related: The handstand pushup.
2. Personally: Communicating effectively with my 9 year son without killing him.
What are you doing to improve it? 1. Slowly rebuilding my strength in my left bicep due to an injury.

2. Taking deep breathes and repeating, “this is a phase!” + doing CrossFit 4 x a week to keep my sanity.

The Burning Questions

Inside the box:

Why did you begin CrossFitting? I wanted to prove to myself that I could become a physically and mentally stronger individual and that my 40’s would not slow me down as an athlete, but only make me better.
What’s your first memory of CrossFit Hilton Head? Waking up so sore that I could not lift my tooth brush to brush my teeth.
What was your worst workout ever? “Murph”
What’s the best part about coming to CrossFit Hilton Head? The camaraderie with such a diverse group of people, who are all sweating, cursing and pushing themselves to the limit. Craig yelling “Work!”
Do you have any CFHH goals? Yes.
1. Improve my technique and strength in all my over head related skills: Overhead Squat, Snatch, Pull-Ups etc…
2. Be a good, supportive, encouraging teammate to my fellow CrossFitters.

Outside the box:

What has CFHH done for you outside of the box? Given me a subtle, quiet internal strength knowing anything is possible.

Do you have any advice for someone thinking about joining CrossFit Hilton Head? Don’t be afraid. Come join the party! When you walk through those doors and stare at the big white board don’t look at it and say “I Can’t.” Take it one rep, one exercise, one movement, one day at at time.
What’s next for you outside the gym? I am going back to school working towards my Master’s degree in Nursing to become a Nurse Practitioner

5 questions in 5 seconds:

Would you rather:
Be stronger or faster?
Eat Paleo Pizza or drink Norcal margaritas? Pizza Baby…my favorite food no matter how you slice it.
Do Fran naked in front of all your friends and PR or do Fran clothed and never have your time improve? Fran Naked. Who cares about a little jiggling…always strive to improve and be your best.
Do 20 muscle ups for time or 200 double unders for time? DU.
Drink out of somebody else’s water bottle or wear somebody else’s gym clothes? Water bottle, because as my kids put it, “You can always waterfall it.”

Coach’s Thoughts:

I remember first meeting Robin. She wasn’t sure about all this CrossFit stuff. That was a
year and a half ago. Today, her whole family does it.

Robin is a competitor. This can be a gift and a curse; can drive us to excel and blind us to
our success. Robin has found a balance with this. She works hard in the gym. Real hard.
But she uses what she learns in the gym to make her life outside the gym better. The gym
does not define her, only refines her. She would probably be the first to admit that
working out around others helps motivate her, but she is self-motivated not selfishly
motivated. She doesn’t compare her PR’s and times to anybody but herself. She seems to
be finding peace with who she is as a woman and, at the same time, willing to explore the
“next level” just for exploration’s sake. She has nothing to prove, she just wants to learn.

She is always clapping, smiling, supporting and working. It’s a treat having her in the
building. I am grateful to have her as a friend.
